The craft

What is bullion?

Bullion embroidery is worked by hand in fine coiled metal wire — gold, silver and copper — couched onto felt, wool or silk ground over a raised padding. Each coil is cut and laid individually, which is why no two pieces are identical and why the technique has dressed uniforms, blazers and regalia for centuries.

A single club crest can take a day of work at the frame. Nothing about it is automated, and nothing about it can be reproduced by machine.

How a piece is made

The design traced onto fabric stretched on a wooden frame
01 · The design The artwork is traced onto cloth stretched drum-tight across a wooden frame. Nothing is stitched until the drawing is exact.
Gold bullion wire being laid along the traced outline by hand
02 · Laying the wire Coiled metal wire is cut to length and couched down stitch by stitch, following the outline and the lettering first.

03 · Filling The field is filled in colour and metal over a raised padding, which is what gives bullion work its depth.
Filling the design with gold and coloured thread
04 · Finishing Edges are worked, ends buried and the piece cut from the frame — then checked against the artwork before it is mounted or boxed.

Heritage

A family trade

The house began as S. Lal Zariwala, zari and embroidery manufacturers, in a workshop in Delhi, India — the first merchants of its class. The clipping at left is the earliest record we hold of it, half a century old, and the reason Leo Crafts exists.

The same family still runs the frames. What passed down is not a machine or a process but a way of laying wire, taught at the bench and carried from Delhi to New Jersey, where the studio now serves clubs, houses and associations across the world.

That inheritance shows in the detail. Every coil is cut and laid by hand, every edge finished, every colour matched against the artwork before a piece leaves the frame.

We put all of it into each crest, because a crest is the only thing that can showcase what true bullion hand embroidery is.
